"I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.” - Carl Jung
EMDR is a relatively new form of therapy compared to other therapy modalities. While it is considered a newer type of therapy, it is evidenced based, which means research shows that it is effective.
The acronym EMDR stands for eye movement desensitization and reprocessing. It’s a fancy way of saying its a form of treatment that involves a technique called bilateral stimulation that helps change the way our brain processes information and responds to triggering memories from past traumas. Our bodies naturally process emotions and thoughts related to events in this way while we sleep, however sometimes when our emotions are heightened, our body needs a little help. This is when EMDR therapy can be beneficial in getting through these stuck points. EMDR then is facilitated through bilateral visual, sensory, or auditory stimulation done by eye movement, tapping or sound with the use of headphones. In a nutshell with the guidance of EMDR you will be able to use your body’s own natural way of working through emotions and its a natural way of healing.
EMDR therapy is an effective treatment for different mental health disorders, including post traumatic stress disorder (also known as PTSD), trauma including childhood trauma, anxiety, phobias, low self esteem, and grief.
EMDR is a treatment modality that can be used for children, adolescents, as well as adults.
